No extra songs, that was te biggest let down. Being a big fan of the game, and being born in the 80s, I was looking to this game. Then the controls are broken beyond help. But then I picked it up, new for $50, and I wished I never got this game. Do not, NEVER, buy this game, rent it first. Do not buy this game, I can not say this enought. Get one of the newer games, they are alot better.The ScareCrow
There's enough here to keep you occupied for an afternoon, but then it's back on the shelf while you play any other version of Guitar Hero because Rock the 80s has so little to offer. I played the game on medium and unlocked almost everything - Grim Ripper and a few guitars.
But it's still full price. After Guitar Hero revolutionized the video game industry and Guitar Hero II made it even better, an 80s edition should have been a blast.The first clue is that the game wasn't labeled Guitar Hero III - it was "Encore." Okay, so it's like an expansion pack.
Yeah, it's not here. Still, I gave it a whirl.As is the case with the previous two installments, the songs are all covers.
Some are 80s icons and done really well - "Burning for You," "Radar Love," "Turning Japanese." But many are done poorly - as a classic metal fan, I was sorely disappointed with the Iron Maiden classic "Wrathchild" being, in a word, terrible.Remember all that extra stuff you could buy in GH2. There's no extra songs or costumes.Basically, this is a GH2 expansion pack marketed as a stand-alone game.
Unless you really like the 80s or just need to complete the Guitar Hero collection, pass this abortive effort over.
Also I was proved wrong again by the character designs, yes you can represent punk rock without having a mohawk, and yes Judy Nails looks good with big hair. Before owning this game I felt like 80's music was 'techno, pop, and cheesy' then my mom bought me this game (since i am a HUGE fan of the Guitar Hero series). After the first twenty minutes of playing, I was proven wrong.The soundtrack is great, out of all the games I have the 2nd highest number songs downloaded on my iPod from it's soundtrack (the highest one is the songs from GH3). And I actually found myself singing along to a lot of the songs.Yes, most of the songs arn't the origional master tracks (Police Truck, Only A Lad, Holy Diver, Turning Japanese, Radar Love, etc). but Wavegroup did an amazing job at making them sound like the origionals (in my opinion their Police Truck was better than the Dead Kennedy's origional).I was dissapointed with the stages, they were identical to those in GH2 but with bright colors, but overall I'm a very happy customer.
All in all we like the game. I purchased GH3 for my wife and then got her this game as she was a teen in the 80's. She says that its a little bit short for game play but she likes the music. Also she has fun playing it.Its a good game for beginners
Red Octane probably knows this and didn't really want to advertise this disgrace tot he product line. I find that in most cases the music doesn't match the note-target thingys. This game is a great idea and one that I've been looking forward to, however the actual execution of the game is really poor. Overall very un-enjoyable way to spend a few hours (not to mention $). No, I'm not talking about the abundant music-sync issues, I'm talking about the music not matching the targets you have to hit - so much so that for me, the game is totally not enjoyable. I know the songs in the game, intimately, and it's really off. It's a shame. Perhaps Red Octane should produce a 'Folk Song Hero' or maybe a 'Disco Hero', it couldn't be any worse.
